Happy St Andrew's Day

 Happy St Andrew's Day! This year we are repeating by popular demand the arms recorded in 1962 by the Scottish National Committee of Ophthalmic Opticians. Usually nowadays the saltire is only allowed, as here, for a national organization. Quite a spectacle...



Marchmont delivers St Andrew's Day Lecture

 Marchmont Herald, The Hon. Adam Bruce WS, gave the St Andrew's Day Lecture of the Heraldry Society of Scotland today in Edinburgh. The Lord Lyon gave the vote of thanks. The topic was the mediaeval history and heraldry of the Bruce Family.



Athelstaneford Saltire Service

 On St Andrew's Day, Unicorn and March attended the Lord Lieutenant of East Lothian at the Annual Saltire Service at Athelstaneford.



HSS St Andrew's Day Dinner

 The Lord Lyon, President, attended the St Andrew's Day Dinner of the Heraldry Society of Scotland. The guest speaker was Lady Elish Angiolini LT DBE KC, Lord Clerk Register.

Funeral of Hon Herald Painter

 The Lord Lyon attended the funeral in St Mary's Church, Kirriemuir, of a former artist of the Court of the Lord Lyon, Alisoun Grant, who was given  the title of Honorary Herald Painter by the Lyon Sir Thomas Innes of Learney. May she rest in peace.

 The Lord Lyon was honoured by the conferring of the honorary degree of Doctor of Laws by the University of Dundee at the Winter Graduation held in the Caird Hall Dundee on the 22th November 2024.

Remembrance Day

 At Remembrance time, we honour Major Alan Edmonstoune Greenshields Leadbetter decorated for gallantry at Gallipoli but killed near Ypres in August 1917, aged 20. His grieving father petitioned for differenced arms for Alan and had a memorial window installed in Bedrule Church.

Athelstaneford Roundel

  The roundel donated by the Lord Lyon and Officers of Arms to the Saltire Timeline at Athelstaneford has now been completed.  




2025 will mark the 60th anniversary of the unveiling of the Saltire Memorial at Athelstaneford. A timeline of stone roundels set into the path will tell the story of the adoption and use of the saltire as a symbol of Scotland from the Battle of Athelstaneford in 832 through to the crowned saltire emblem of the Scottish Parliament in 1999.
