Lyon addresses the Scottish Provosts' Association

At the City Chambers of Dundee on the 26th September the Lord Lyon addressed the AGM of the Scottish Provosts' Association on the topic of “Scottish Civic Heraldry and its Economic Development Usage. “ There was a lively question and answer session after the talk.

The arms of Dundee were recorded in 1932 and are blazoned:
Azure a pot of three growing lilies Argent.

Curiously, the artist in the Register omitted to paint the dragons' wings displayed and actually painted FOUR lilies. Lyon Clerk has noted on the entry that in future the painting must follow the blazon.

Here is said note:

And two hundred years ago ....

Arms were recorded for George Kinnear, umquhile Master of the Merchants Company of Edinburgh.

Curiously, the arms in quarters 2 and 3 do not match the blazon:
Quarterly: first and fourth Sable on a bend Or three martlets Vert within a bordure of the Second for Kinnear; second and third Argent on a fret of four pieces Gules as many hearts Or and in every interstice a rose of the Second barbed Vert for Gardiner.

On this Day 100 years ago

On the 20th September 1918, arms were matriculated for The Hon Sir Lancelot Douglas Carnegie GCVO, KCMG, HM Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary to Portugal.

The blazon is: Argent an eagle displayed Azure beaked and membered Gules charged on its breast with three mullets of the field for difference.
