Lyon installed as Chancellor of the United Diocese of Moray, Ross and Caithness.

On 19th August in St Andrew’s Cathedral , Inverness, the Lord Lyon was installed by the Most Revd Mark Strange, Primus of the Scottish Episcopal Church, as Chancellor of the United Diocese of Moray, Ross and Caithness.



The arms of the united diocese were recorded in 1953 as follows:

Parted per fess and in chief per pale, First Or two lions combattant Gules pulling at a cushion of the last issuant from a crescent Azure on a chief wavy of the third three mullets Argent (for the See of Moray); Second Argent a bishop standing on the sinister habited in a long robe close-girt Purpure mitred and holding in the sinister hand a crozier Or and pointing with the dexter hand to a saint affrontée his hands clasped on his breast proper. habited Gules, about his head a halo of the Thrd (for the See of Ross); Third Azure issuant from an antique boat Or a demi-bishop proper vested Argent, his mitre and pastoral staff in bend sinister of the second accompanied by two demi-angels, one in the dexter and the other in the sinister chief holding open books proper their wings addorsed also of the second (for the See of Caithness). 


New Heraldic Glass

The Trades House of Glasgow has begun a project in association with City of Glasgow College to provide each of the crafts with a stained glass window in the Royal Infirmary. First up is the Incorporation of Wrights. The Clyde winds its way through the centre of the window and the stylised shell is a reference to the Royal's spiral staircase.


The Incorporation of Wrights was granted arms in 1924 as follows:

Parted per fess dovetailed Gules and Or, in chief an ancient Scots nail hammer and axe in saltire surmounted of a wright's chisel edge downwards paleways and in base the half length figure of St Kentigern affronté vested and mitred his right hand raised in the act of benediction and having in his left hand a crozier all proper.

Clan Chattan Association AGM

The AGM of the Clan Chattan Association was held in Inverness on the 2nd August and the Lord Lyon gave a lecture on” Scottish Heraldry and the Clans.” The audience came from all over the world and the chairman was Allan Maclean of Dochgarroch.


New Grant of Arms

The Lord Lyon has granted arms to Ian Robert McPhee. The artist is David Allan.



Per fess Azure and Or in chief a sword Argent point downwards hilted and pommelled of the Second between a merino ram's horns conjoined Proper, in base a galley under sail of the Third flags and pennons flying Gules.

Honorary Vexillologist at Lyon Court

The Lord Lyon has appointed Philip Tibbetts to be Honorary Vexillologist to the Lyon Court, for one year in the first instance, from August 1st 2018. Philip is Community Vexillologist to the Flag Institute.
