The Celtic Bishops Conference held in Inverness on 29th January was addressed by the Lord Lyon on the History of the Office of the Lord Lyon. Present were bishops from the Church of Ireland, the Church in Wales and the Scottish Episcopal Church.
On the 22nd January the Commission of Ross Herald Extraordinary was completed. The Lord Lyon wants to record his thanks and appreciation of the immense and far-reaching work of Mark Dennis in the field of Scottish Heraldry. His contribution was insightful and passionate.
Unicorn adds: Many people have been brought into the love of heraldry by Mark's exuberantly illustrated booklet Scottish Heraldry - An Invitation, published by the Heraldry Society of Scotland.
Mark's contribution both to the commissioning and the execution of the Royal Arms for the Scottish Parliament building was similarly immense and he has painted also the arms of TRH The Duke and Duchess of Rothesay as well as many wonderful funeral hatchments, including a splendid one for HM The Late Queen Mother, complete with pleurants supporters.
David Allan, for many years one of the artist-calligraphers at the Lyon Office, is open for the commission of digital heraldic artwork. His work and contact details can be seen on his website HERE.
The Lord Lyon proposed the toast to the Immortal Memory of Robert Burns at the Annual Burns Supper of Fraserburgh Burns Club which was founded in 1928.
The Lord Lyon at the Annual Burns Supper of the Irvine Burns Club was made an Honorary member. At the foundation of the Club, six members knew Robert Burns personally. Lyon presented the club with Burns's proposed arms painted in 18th century style by Mark Dennis.
We celebrate National Handwriting Day by showing the very first page of the Public Register of all Arms and Bearings in Scotland, or Lyon Register.The first recording is in fact the seal of the Lyon Office itself which is going to validate all subsequent entries.
On the 22nd January the Lord Lyon gave a lecture to the University of Dundee Staff Club on the topic of the ” Court of the Lord Lyon“. A vigorous question and answer session followed.
The Lord Lyon on the 14th January attended a Special Graduation at Aberdeen University. The Chancellor HRH The Duchess of Rothesay conferred honorary doctorate degrees on HRH The Princess Royal and Professor Janet H Darbyshire CBE. The Princess Royal gave the Graduation Address.
The Lord Lyon will give the 2020 Marion Fraser Lecture for Scotland's Churches Trust in New Register House on Tuesday 9th June at 5.30 p.m. The Lecture title is “Signs of Faith – Ecclesiastical Heraldry and the Lyon Court Public Registers”.
Today marks the anniversary of the issuing of the papal bull by Nicholas V in 1451 establishing the University of Glasgow, the fourth oldest in the English-speaking world after Oxford, Cambridge and St Andrews.
