Order of Malta

 Lyon, Rothesay and Falkland yesterday attended the Annual Mass of the Order of Malta celebrated by Archbishop Leo Cushley, Metropolitan Archbishop of St Andrews and Edinburgh, in St Mary's Metropolitan Cathedral.  The Venerable Order of St John had several representatives present led by James Bingham KStJ.

At the investiture in the Order Pro Merito Melitensi, the Order of Malta's Order of Merit,  at the end of Mass, it had been intended to invest the late Major-General Mark Strudwick CBE, former Prior of the Venerable Order of St John, in the rank of Grand Officer with Swords. The introit For the Fallen by Douglas Guest was performed in Mark's memory, the composer, former organist at Westminster Abbey, being the father of Mrs Sue Strudwick to whom we send our sincere condolences, as we do to Mark's son and daughter.

Hatchment at the New Club

 On Monday 27th September, the Lord Lyon attended the presentation to the New Club by Mark Dennis, umwhile Ross Herald Extraordinary, of his painting of the hatchment of the late Duke of Edinburgh.

Swearing-in of New Heralds and Pursuivants

 The Lord Lyon held a Head Court today in the Court of Session during which the new heralds and pursuivants were installed.


Sir Crispin Agnew of Lochnaw Bart LVO QC, takes the oath as Albany Herald Extraordinary.

Lyon Attends Opening of the Legal YEar

 The Lord Lyon attended the Opening of the Legal Year presided over by the Lord President of the Court of Session in Court One at Parliament Hall Edinburgh today. After the Opening there was a service to mark the occasion in St Giles Cathedral led by the Revd Calum McLeod

Death of Mark Strudwick

 It was with great sadness that the Lord Lyon and the Court of Lord Lyon heard of the death of Major General Mark Strudwick CBE, former Governor of Edinburgh Castle and former Prior of the Venerable Order of St John in Scotland. Our condolences are with his widow and family.

Heraldry Society AGM

 The Lord Lyon, President, chaired the Annual General Meeting of the Heraldry Society of Scotland today in Perth and gave an address.



During the AGM the Lord Lyon, President, presented Robin Blair CVO WS, Lord Lyon from 2001-2008, and currently Angus Herald Extraordinary, with his insignia as a Fellow of the Society.

Standing Council of the Baronetage

 The Lord Lyon was the guest speaker at the Dinner of the Standing Council of the Baronetage held in Dundas Caste on the 23rd September. His talk was entitled “The Lord Lyon’s Roles and the Baronetcy of Scotland". Albany Herald is on the Executive Committee.

The Lord Lyon received the salute at the end of the Beating of the Retreat for the Cadet Force of Glenalmond College.

Unicorn at the Colquhoun Club

 Unicorn Pursuivant, at the AGM of the Colquhoun Club of Glasgow, explained how it is thanks to a Glasgow citizen, Sir David McCowan, that the Scots Officers of Arms have appeared clothed in the exact design of tabards they currently wear, since - and no sooner than - May 1928.

Cupar Celebration Weekend

The Lord Lyon was guest of honour at the Cupar Celebration Weekend 2021 on the 18th September. He unveiled new heritage signage in the town and a plaque to commemorate a new exhibition. The arms of Cupar Community Council are based on those of the former royal burgh.


One element of the Exhibition is the life of Sir David Lindsay of the Mount, a former Lord Lyon who lived near Cupar. At the Duncan Library, Lyon named the two Grotesques on the tower. Their names were chosen by the people of Cupar and District.

  The Lord Lyon presented New College, Edinburgh, with letters patent granting a coat of arms this afternoon in honour of its 175th Anniversary. The artist was Yvonne Holton.

Duke of Edinburgh's Hatchment

 The eminent heraldic artist, Mark Dennis, formerly Ross Herald Extraordinary, has painted this wonderful hatchment for the late Duke of Edinburgh with the fouled anchor for Lord High Admiral of the United Kingdom.


The shield is encircled by the Garter and the Thistle collar and ensigned of his coronet as a Royal Duke.

Lyon at the Scottish Genealogy Society

On the 4th September the Lord Lyon as President  of the Scottish Genealogy Society conducted the AGM and a talk was given by Ken Nisbet entitled “Poor Relief and poor Law -The Scottish Solution."



Lyon addresses the Robert Burns World Federation Conference

 On the 4th September the Lord Lyon gave a lecture to the Robert Burns World Federation Conference on the subject of the New Coat of Arms for Robert Burns . The conference was held in Renfrew .

Lyon attends the Bonnetmakers' Dinner in Edinburgh

 On the 3rd September the Lord Lyon attended the Annual Dinner of the Incorporation of Bonnetmakers and Dyers of Edinburgh. The main speaker was Mrs Ruth Maltman BEM TD DL the first woman to become Deacon Convener of the Incorporated Trades of Glasgow.
